PhotoVoice is the process of having a group of people with a shared experience take their own unique photographs of that experience to further their collective understanding and solidarity of their situation. The slides here visually demonstrate my experience in the early parts of the online learning process. Themes of time and time management, organization, and focus come through most directly in this work.
PhotoVoice, as described above, allows people to capture and review photos, and ultimately engage in dialogue over a shared experience. The photos bring out the individuality of the situation and how each unique participate see the experience through a different lens. However, when brought together and shared, themes begin to emerge that are shared among most, if not all, the participants. The discussions that follow allow the participants to dive deeper into their experience and bring out larger themes, ideas, and emotions. Many students share similar experiences in school, but all come with a different viewpoint or background. A PhotoVoice style task can help build community and understanding among students, and bring discussion and awareness to a collective experience.
The process of PhotoVoice combines a variety of technical and academic skills adaptable for a variety of grade levels. From a technical standpoint, students will take photos, then optionally edit them, upload them to cloud storage, and share them via a selected platform (e.g. Google Slides, VoiceThread). The creation and editing processes engage the creativity skill sets while the sharing will engage their communication skills. On the academic end, the students' ability to synthesize their thoughts about the project, analyze how their pictures related to the experience, and develop themes from group discussions all reach higher level learning tasks. In addition, the shared experience an help to build a sense of community and understanding among diverse student groups.
