Pixlr Express is an powerful, simple, and free image editing tool that also integrates seamlessly with Google Drive. When selecting a technology to review for the Common Sense Media database, this tool stood out as an excellent example of how practical and free applications can be utilized for authentic instructional purposes. The media database is a great tool for educators who wish to vet their software and get both expert and user opinions prior to utilizing it in an instructional setting.

How is Pixlr Express used

This online photo editor provides all of the essential features needed for quick and easy touch-ups. What sells this tool for my classroom is the seamless integration with Google Drive. Teaching in a school system using the Google Suite for Education, students utilize this system for everything from document creation to sharing with staff and peers to basic file storage. When it comes to photography, most students have access to a high quality camera on the portable devices. When students use their devices for photo assignments and media tasks, they will quickly and easily upload their work to their Drive using the free Google Drive app on the device. Once at a computer, they can open their photos using the Pixlr Editor right from their drive, make any changes and edits to them they need, and save their work right back in their drive. There are other free editors available, but in Pixlr's case, it's the simplicity of the process from start to finish that drives the use.

When used in conjunction with direct instruction on photo editing techniques and strategies, students can freely apply their skills and creativity appropriate for the application or assignment.
